An extremely rare early 19th Century Mason’s Patented Ironstone China coffee cup and matching saucer in the Chinoiserie pattern number 303. This pattern is known as “Pekin Japan”. The coffee cup is footed and features beautiful Japanese scenes. The design is hand-painted over a printed outline on the exterior, interior and even the handle of the cup. The matching saucer, which is almost never found with an original cup, also features detailed Asian scenes.
The pattern number 303 can be referenced on pages 85 and 86 in The Mason's Collectors Club book " A Guide to Mason's patent Ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848". This pattern dates the cup and saucer to between 1830 and 1845. The cup is decorated with shades of gold, cobalt blue, burnt orange and brick red.
The cup and saucer were made in Staffordshire, England. Both the coffee cup and saucer base, bear the correct mark of Mason’s Ironstone Patented China. The coffee cup measures 2 ¼” tall and 4” in diameter. The saucer is 6” in diameter.
